Waitrose, Banstead is a two-storey multi space car park used everyday by shoppers, visitors and town centre workers. The car park was in need of refurbishment following years of exposure to weather and the constant use of vehicles, which had badly damaged the existing Sika system, which in turn had failed over time.

Due to the wear and tear that had been caused over time, plus a devastating arson attack which took place one year previously, the retail park was in desperate need of refurbishment. RG Carter turned to Rio Asphalt & Paving Co Ltd to provide this solution.

After consultation, Rio offered a system which would address the requirement for a quality repair and refurbishment system, would decrease lost revenue and offer minimal disruption to the car park which was in constant use throughout the works.

The area was overlaid using IKO Permapark roofing, which included one layer of 25mm paving / wearing course and 10mm of waterproofing. This system proves effective due to its long lasting properties and ability to provide longevity in an area with heavy footfall, therefore it proved to be the natural choice. The existing Aco channels needed lifting due to the 35mm increase in Asphalt, therefore it was prudent that attention to detail was used at this stage to ensure no delays were experienced further into the project.

Rio also installed bespoke floating slab detailing around the existing fencing which meant 500m of safety fencing did not require alteration; resulting in a considerable cost saving to the end client. Works were completed on a two storey level, therefore accessing this area with plant and materials proved to be challenging; lateral thinking and lots of forward planning were critical at all stages to ensure the project was completed on time, and to ensure the areas were kept safe for all parties.

The amazing properties and long lasting wear of this material proved it was the perfect and right choice to use. This was a major refurbishment for a well reputed retailer, It was very rewarding to complete works on time and under budget. It was also a positive to have the opportunity to change people’s perception regarding the use and properties of Mastic Asphalt, and display another dimension of this versatile material
