The Stone Data Centre is the main computer nerve centre for the Royal Bank of Scotland. This centre is one of only 3 in the country. The backup power contained within the building to ensure continual power is so vast that it is used by the National Grid as their secondary power source for the entire Staffordshire area. It has been said that should the system fail it would cost RBS approximately £1 million per minute if offline. It is a highly secure facility.
The existing loose laid ballasted single ply waterproofing membrane had failed after only 10 years. Any water ingress could have mean that the facility would have to shut down with the cost implication being almost catastrophic. Rio Group stripped the existing system, including insulation and installed a new waterproofing system whilst ensuring that there was no disruption to the running of the centre.
Being a highly secure site, the contractors of Rio Group had to undergo a rigorous interview and vetting process. A proven track record in working in similar environments was required.
No hot works were allowed on site, so an alternative to the single ply system had to be sought. A liquid cold applied system was chosen as the most effective option. The client required a full built-up system that adhered to current building regulations and u-values with a 20 year guarantee.
