• Portway Car Park – Refurbishment Works
  • Oxfordshire
  • South Oxon District Council

Following a competitive tendering process, Rio Surfacing were successful in our detailed quality and cost submission and then engaged by the Council to carry out extensive refurbishment works to the Portway community car park in Wantage. As a busy community car park area serving a neighbourhood centre, school, local business and residential houses/apartments, the planning and delivery of the works needed careful and thorough organisation to give maximum availability of parking spaces while maintaining progress to the required programme of works.

The Scheme involved the following works :

  • Incorporating sustainable drainage in the form of rain gardens, swales and porous paving, associated surface water storage and drainage works
  • Provision of new landscape areas with associated specialist soils, plants and tree planting
  • Hard landscaping work including different forms of paving, resurfacing and kerbing
  • Adaption of existing site drainage to interlink with new sustainable installation
  • Replacement of existing aged lighting lanterns with new energy efficient LED units. Relocation and certification of existing car park pay and display machines
  • Supply and installation of bespoke paving panels to complement the existing surroundings
  • Full preparation and resurfacing to the entire car park and adjacent footway areas
  • Installation of full lining details and EV charging bay decals

This busy car park is adjacent to a school and arts centre so works were timed to begin during the summer when both venues would be quieter – the project was then completed by December 2024 in line with the planting season to ensure the extensive landscaping installation gained the best opportunity to flourish in spring 2025. Works were phased to allow for continued partial use of the car park throughout the project allowing the residents and community centre users to continue day to day activities.
